Shri Ranjit Kumar Bhatia, IPS

 

Born in Jodhpur (Rajasthan), Shri R. K. Bhatia joined the Indian Police Service (IPS) in 1974 after taking a Master's degree in Economics. He also holds a Masters Diploma in Public Administration. He is a UP cadre officer and has served in the CBI, Cabinet Secretariat and CISF. Before joining lTBP, he was DG of National Disaster Response Force.

 

Shri R.K. Bhatia has served in various important positions in UP, he was Additional Director General(Security) and UP-Nepal Border Force, IG(Establishment), IG (Security), IG (Vigilance), IG Kanpur Zone and IG Bareilly Zone etc. During his stint in 3 dacoit infested districts in UP, he busted 12 interstate dacoit gangs. As SP Allahabad, he neutralized a notorious gang of dacoits which carried a reward of rupees one lakh. As IG (Establishment) in UP he was instrumental in carrying out the restructuring of the mammoth UP Police in late 1990's. He had a glorious career as Additional Director General in CISF.

 

During his tenure as Director General National Disaster Response Force, he gave an independent identity to NDRF Battalions and launched a modernization programme. A separate budget and administrative powers were given to NDRF. The eight disaster management battalions of NDRF have now got their own campuses and infrastructure. He provided state of the art equipments of international standards to DM teams. Under his leadership NDRF battalions did an excellent job during the recent floods in Bihar (Kosi river), Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka. Recently NDRF teams rescued 15 victims alive from a collapsed building in Bellary, Karnataka. He has also participated in INSARAG Asia Pacific Conference in Beijing in 2009.

 

For his remarkable and outstanding service in the field of policing he has been conferred with the Police Medal for Meritorious Service in 1991 and the President's Police Medal for Distinguished Service in 1997. He has also been awarded the Difficult Area Posting Medal with Bar.

 

Shri R.K. Bhatia is fond of outdoor sports. He is a good tennis and basketball player. During his training days in the LBS Academy, Mussoorie, he was the captain of the champion cross country race team.
